The Lab compilation series was established in 2009, and has since gone on to host some of the electronic music scene's most revered DJs. Loco Dice, Steve Bug and Seth Troxler have made the series a 'must check' compilation brand, pushing new music, new artists and labels to the fore, and allowing the DJs to experiment and mix up the sounds in The Lab.

And so the fourth installment of the series is handed to a British producer/DJ who is not shy of musical experimentation himself. Paul Woolford bit the electronic bug from an early age, searching out the latest new sounds on the radio and in magazines and through the bustling club scene around his native city of Leeds. It was here that he came across the now infamous Back To Basics club night, at which his dedication to the music would land him the resident DJ role within a couple of years. Honing his sound and DJ skills, Woolford quickly elevated to land key DJ spots around the world and a residency at Ibiza's We Love Space.

As a producer, Woolford has built up a vast catalogue of dependable, and at times groundbreaking, music on labels like 2020 Vision, Junior Boys Own, NRK Music and Cocoon, under his own name as well as aliases Bobby Peru, Hip Therapist & more…

Never one to lay down into own defined style or genre for too long, Woolford has taken huge strides over the last couple of years to lay down foundations in the deepest areas of the underground music scene, and his love of the electronic sound in its purist form has led to new music on cutting edge labels such as Carl Craig's Planet E Recordings, Hotflush (Scuba's label) and Phonica, and it is here that Woolford can be found straddling the barriers of techno, dub, deep house and garage.

His double CD mix for The Lab brings us right up to date with the Woolford philosophy, where genres are completely secondary to good music. The opening of Disc One is a considered segue, deftly mixing disco moods, electro and sophisticated ambient house from artists like Ashley Beedle, Lando Kal, Shed and Daniel Wang, before the familiar stings of Chez Damier's all time classic 'Untitled' (from KMS049) sends Disc One into a lock solid groove. Not for long though, as Woolford expertly guides us through a huge melting pot of sounds and ideas, all the while keeping the mix flowing and listener engaged. Key tracks from Roman Flugel, Dan Ghenacia, Untold and Skudge work their magic and the first mix comes to a crescendo with another classic from the vaults, this time from Carl Craig’s Urban Culture, and the wonderfully epic 'Wonders Of Wishing', still sounding as futuristic today as it did on its original 1993 release date.

Without delay, Disc Two gets straight into the groove with the dirty funk of Super Collider and continues to forage deep and pacey techno house from STL, Fabio Gianelli and the first of two appearances from Trevino AKA Marcus Intalex. Analogue sounds and drum machines are the components that keep driving the mix forward, and a raft of new talent such as Billy Shane, Skudge, Yasua Sato and Kausto provide some stunning moments here, whilst scene stalwarts like Chateau Flight, DJ Harvey and Dan Curtin keep the energy levels right up there.

As Woolford continues to steer his own personal journey through electronic music's marshlands, via new imprint Special Request, further productions for Planet E and Hotflush as well as a renewed global club scene to DJ in, The Lab mix stands as the perfect aural snapshot of a producer and DJ not afraid to take the music where many others fear to go, which is a rare thing nowadays when sticking to the formula often brings the successes that artists crave.

Brooklyn indie-pop act POP ETC (formerly The Morning Benders) are following up their socially responsible name change with a brand new studio album, due out June 12th via Rough Trade. Speaking to Pitchfork, frontman Chris Chu revealed that the self-titled LP was self-produced, with help from Danger Mouse and Andrew Dawson (Kanye West, Lil Wayne). Chu also noted that two songs included on the previously-released POP ETC mixtape, "Halfway to Heaven" and "Everything Is Gone", will appear on the album. Stream them below.

The songs, which indicate a noticeable shift in the band's sound, are the by-product of a musical reawakening for Chu, who turned back to the music of his youth for inspiration. "Over the last few years, I rediscovered music that I loved from when I was a kid: Boyz II Men, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper. There's this whole slew of stuff that went over my head when I was a kid. At the time, I liked it because it made me happy and it sounded cool. Now, I think it's really amazingly well-crafted music."

Back before Brendan Canning was Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning, he was part of a number of other groups, one of them called... Cookie Duster. (Which is apparently a nickname for a mustache. The more you know, etc.) Canning and his fellow Cookie Dusters (sorry, it's fun to type out) have come together again for a new album, the first since they released their self-titled debut album over a decade ago. It's called When Flying Was Easy, and it's out May 15 via SQE Music.

When it comes to electronic music, Bristol's history stands taller than most. Think back to the reggae/hip-hop soundsystems sound of Smith & Mighty and Full Cycle's drum & bass legacy, right through to today's bass/ house innovation from Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything et al. Born and bred in the city, Jody Wisternoff's 25-year musical journey has had connections to just about every aspect in one way or another and every last influence - both classic and contemporary - seeps into his refreshing debut artist album "Trails We Blaze".

But while so many veterans lose their lust for musical discoveries, Wisternoff remains more inspired by new sounds than ever before. As anyone that listens to his monthly Intensified podcasts will know, the Bristolian's finger remains firmly on the pulse of all that is classy and cutting-edge in electronic music - be it the classic Detroit techno of Carl Craig, the warm electronic grooves of Maceo Plex or the leftfield house shapes of Midland.

Back in 1986, a precocious Wisternoff's started his journey by gatecreashing the finals of the DMC Hip Hop Championships at just 13 years old; later releasing a hip- hop track on Smith & Mighty's Three Stripe Records label, gigging with the Jungle Brothers and getting interviewed by Tim Westwood. Three years later, he was controlling the 5,000-strong crowd as a DJ at the famous 90s rave Universe, before helping to pioneer the early UK rave sound as part of West Country breakbeat outfit Sub Love (with Full Cycle's DJ Die, later a member of Roni Size's Reprazent crew).

By 1993, Wisternoff had hooked up with fellow Bristolian and superstar DJ Nick Warren to form Way Out West. In the years that followed, the duo pioneered a cinematic progressive breaks sound - scoring a top 15 hit with "The Gift" in 1996. They have since notched up four top 40 hits and headlined Glastonbury's dance arena. As remixers, the sought-after pair have touched up classics from Orbital, Inner City and Sasha.

Blending elements of house, nu disco, progressive, techno and bass, the upbeat
"Trails We Blaze" condenses Jody's personal journey through music into 12 diverse electronic grooves; referencing his classic and contemporary musical loves.

Representing Jody's modern take on Balearic grooves, tracks like the "How You Make Me Smile" (feat. Pete Josef) and the nu-disco influenced "Just One More" are both soulful and sophisticated; perfect for balmy summer nights.

The album isn't without its darker shades, though. Harking back to his years lost in Bristol bass bins, the hypnotic techno groover "95" and the hip-hop indebted "Red Stripes" both reference Jody's love of vintage jungle, while reworks of the Pete Tong-endorsed "Starstrings" and the Beatport number 1 "Cold Drink Hot Girl" update two of his most classic solo tracks.

A journey that lives up to its title, "Trails We Blaze" is as clean as a mid summer sky, but still captures the complex beauty and deep textures of little fluffy clouds.

SUN KIL MOON / AMONG THE LEAVES

Among The Leaves is the 5th full length album by Mark Kozelek under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Played almost entirely on nylon string guitar, this 17-song all original album was recorded between October 2011 and January 2012 in San Francisco. Among The Leaves - words which caught Mark’s attention from a John Connolly novel - finds Mark relaxed, singing playfully about his life as a musician while retaining the melancholic spirit of his 20 year catalog. Mark’s love for San Francisco and Northern California are at the heart of this new album. “My first album (Down Colorful Hill) was released in 1992” says Kozelek, “but creatively, I feel like I’m just beginning. The new album was written and recorded impulsively, without second guessing. I didn’t have that kind of confidence in the past.” Unlike Red House Painters’ epic Rollercoaster, described by Rolling Stone as “the slowest and mopiest self revelations ever put to tape” or Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway, which Billboard Magazine called “heartbreaking,” Among The Leaves displays a more raw and humorous side of Mark’s songwriting. Aaron Prellwitz, recording engineer of Red House Painters and all 5 Sun Kil Moon albums describes the latest effort as “wonderfully direct." Kozelek curiously ties together legends Joe Frazier, Bobby Fischer and Ed Gein in ‘The Winery’, ‘‘Song for Richard Collopy’ is a touching tribute to the late San Francisco guitar repairman, and ‘Sunshine In Chicago’ – written just before taking the stage at a Chicago venue last year – is a funny, self deprecating poke at life on the road. Though Among The Leaves is mostly in the solo, nylon string style of Admiral Fell Promises, a new ensemble of players joined Mark for a portion of the record, recalling the same spirit as April and Tiny Cities, but with a fresh, new sound.

Good news for all you Edward Shape & the Magnetic Zeros fans – the LA group have announced that they will be releasing their much anticipated second studio album ‘HERE’ on 28th May! The album, which is the follow-up to their 2009 debut ‘Up From Below’, was self-produced and recorded in Bogalusa, LA and in their studio in Ojai, CA.

Of the new album, frontman Alex Ebert says: “The making of this album has spanned a time of immense perseverance and, thankfully, co-creation. Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970) was an American singer and songwriter from Port Arthur, Texas.

Early in her life, Joplin cultivated a rebellious and unconventional lifestyle, becoming a beatnik poet. She began her singing career as a folk and blues singer in San Francisco, playing clubs and bars with her guitar and auto-harp.

Joplin first came to prominence in the late 1960s as the lead singer of the psychedelic-acid rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company, and later as a solo artist with her more soulful and bluesy backing groups, The Kozmic Blues Band and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. She was one of the more popular acts at the Monterey Pop Festival and later became one of the major attractions to the Woodstock festival and the Festival Express train tour.

Joplin was well known for her performing abilities and her fans referred to her stage presence as electric. At the height of her career, she was known as "The Queen of Rock and Roll" as well as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul" and became known as Pearl amongst her friends. Janis Joplin died on Sunday, October 4, 1970 at the age of 27. The official cause of death was an overdose of heroin, combined with the effects of alcohol. Her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Joplin number 46 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004, and number 28 on its 2008 list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Simply Red were a British soul band, formed in 1985, that have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide to date! Everybody still remembers their first big hit: "Holding Back The Years" was their first #1 hit in the US. In 1989 they followed up with "If You Don't Know Me By Now" which they released as a single, producing their second U.S. #1 hit, and one of the biggest singles of the year internationally. They also had great success with "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)"in 1985.

Singer Mick Hucknall, who by the time the band broke up in 2010 was the only original member left, has always been the face and motor of the band. Simply Red's final concert took place at the O2 Arena in London on 19 December 2010.

Providing the perfect launch point for ‘Pure’, from its first propulsive beat to the opening sweep of its atomic synths, the title track of Solarstone’s new LP instantly addresses the big rooms. Clarifying that vision further, the celestially gazing ‘Voyager’ masses its booming drums to pulsate the speakers for a heart-in-mouth outer space ride.

With the Billy McGruddy-vocalled ‘Shake The Demons’, Richard re-establishes one of the most talked-about connections from his ‘Touchstone’ album. Following the club hits ‘Electric Love’ and ‘Is There Anyone Out There’, the pair’s latest co-production extends a different tone. Catching the mood of McGruddy’s hazy, higher-than-the-sun vocals, Solarstone directs them to the floor, backed by mesmeric synths and killer 303 churn.

Amongst its vocalists, ‘Pure’ debuts a very special new talent. Over the course of the album’s runtime, Clare Stagg’s folk-tinged delivery makes three stunning appearances. On current single ‘The Spell’, she brings absorbing lyrics, which balance aching lament with an un-crushable spirit of optimism. Don’t be fooled though… with its running bass, bleep-fuelled entrancing lead line and speaker baiting drums, behind ‘The Spell’s immersive vocal splendour beats the hypersonic heart of a floor dominator.

Those on the hunt for the album’s ‘Seven Cities’/’4Ever’/’Touchstone’ moment won’t need to look any further than ‘Fireisland’. Co-produced with Egypt’s Aly & Fila, from the opening throb of its bass guitar and shimmering Med-head melodies, it works in Spanish guitar flecks and sun-kissed synths. On ‘Falcons’ meanwhile, Solarstone is sharing studio space with Italy’s Giuseppe Ottaviani, with the pair conjuring a seismic, uprush-ing number. With its calling female harmonies, breath-stealing synths and high-end horsepower production, ‘Falcons’ is pure trance served by the shot glass. Back in solo mode, on ‘Please’, Solarstone doesn’t back off the throttle for a second, creating a floor flamer that features the spoken vocal musings of a certain well-known 60s rock poet.

Where the drums drop out of the album, ‘Pure’ begins to move in more introspective directions. Backed by his sparse breakbeats and live strings, on ‘Where Do We Go From Here’ Richard duets with Betsie Larkin, for a raw, real and emotive vocal two-hander. Set against the mellow drama of chilled, beat-free ambience, ‘Swansong’ – the album’s fittingly titled closing track – sees Hannah Magenta’s heavenly choral refrain cut deep.

Solo, with vocalists old and new, and alongside heavyweight production collaborators, ‘Pure’ is album title and mission statement rolled into one. Taking its producer back to his grass roots, in the process he has distilled its sound. This is pure trance and ‘Pure’ Solarstone.

Japanese wunderkind Shin Nishimura has had releases through DUBFIRE's label SCI-TEC, along with many other vital contemporary labels, and he is the head of Plus Records. His fourth album is coming out worldwide via Intergroove.

This release comes from top Japanese label FOUNTAIN MUSIC and its sub-label PLAZA IN CROWD. "Mash" is a superbly tight production, combining as it does U.K. beats, hard grooves, and the notion of a bigger picture work-of-art: Think innovative stuff that will reinvent tomorrow's techno. Plaza In Crowd's concept - all mankind in one party - is personified with the opening track 'Unity'.

'Earl's Court' boasts cool synths and rhythmic percussion with a sophisticated femme fatale voice sample to produce a slamming track. 'Neal's Yard' is unleashes a wicked groove reminiscent of the best Janet Jackson - rap and minimal rhythms creating a gorgeous sound. 'Milden Hall' goes all sensitive and spacey, with a vocal sample that personifies the over all grandeur of this album.

It's most famous night 'Saturday Sessions' was conceived 5 years ago and has since seen over half a million clubbers pass through its doors.

Disc 1 represents the sound of the most famous room in UK clubbing history 'The Box'. Impressively all artists on this disc have either graced our decks in the last year or are booked to perform this coming year. Our mix starts off with the huge Eric Prydz Remix of 'Midnight City' by M83 and rises straight into 'Antidote' from the most famous trio in Electronic Dance Music right now the Swedish House Mafia. DANIEL WANROOY / SLICE OF LIFE

After countless singles, remixes and an album release under the well known Progression guise, Daniel Wanrooy now moves on to another level in his career and presents his debut solo album entitled "Slice Of Life".

Daniel has been a pretty busy in the midst of the recording sessions for his new album. In the middle of his recording sessions for "Slice Of Life" he finished remix assignments for The Crystal Method, Super8 & Tab, JES and Thrillseekers and saw his earlier single "Endless Moments" secured by Ferry Corsten for his double mix compilation "Once Upon A Night, Vol.2". The same happened with Betsie Larkin with Super8 & Tab's "All We Have Is Now" in the Daniel Wanrooy remix, which Corsten used for "Full On Ferry - Ibiza". If that wasn't enough, Daniel also delivered his DJ mix for the "In Trance We Trust, Volume 14" mix compilation. Bookings poured in and Daniel performed in Brazil, Taiwan, South Africa and the U.K and most European countries. He made his appearance at the Miami Winter Music Conference as he did in the last couple of years and toured almost all of Europe with Tiesto.
This summer, Daniel will also make his debut on Ibiza.

The prelude to all these achievements was the single "Ocean Terrace", which now appears on the album in a special 2012 version that already gained the support of Tiesto, Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and BBC Radio 1. Richard Durand reserved it for his "In Search of Sunrise 8, South Africa" mix compilation. Durand later requested Daniel's "Bangalore" for his "In Search of Sunrise 9, India", once again confirming the outstanding quality of the tracks.

For the album Daniel collaborated with several established artists such as USA Idols finalist Blake Lewis, Elliot Johns, Emma Lock and Hannah Ray. He mastered the album together with Tiesto's producer Dennis Waakop Reijers-Fraaij.

Daniel Wanrooy is proud to present the album in its full glory. He has put a lot of effort in the project and ceased the opportunity to move between styles, showcasing his skills as a prolific producer:
"For the "Slice Of Life" project my goal was to work with various sounds in order to create a varied Electronic Dance Music album, with influences of progressive, house, trance and even techno, with the BPM between 123 and 133. Working with the biggest vocalists in the scene made this a project that I am really proud of."

Andrew Weatherall's history goes back far to the beginning of the British acid house scene, having swung gigs for himself at Danny Rampling's legendary Shoom night off the back of the sort of sounds Andrew showcased on "that" compilation for Nuphonic - entitled 9 O'Clock Drop. Subsequently, his
connections with the original Boys Own record label (and fanzine) led to artist releases, remixes and a
string of legendary London clubs such as Blood Sugar, Circulation and of course Sabresonic (where
the fledgling David Holmes cut his teeth). It was through Primal Scream though that Andrew first made his name. As the producer of Screamadelica he took The Primals, twisted them (best not to ask how) and in turn created the hybrid of narcotically-challenged rock and acid house now seen as a generation-defining release.

Over the years Andrew has been involved in many different artist projects including Sabres of Paradise, Two Lone Swordsman, Andrew & The Boardmen to name but a few. All the while Andrew has been maintaining his output through various alternative projects. In between DJing all over the world, with residencies at Fabric (London), Back to Basics (Leeds), and Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), he also finds time to run the monthly A Love From Outer Space night at The Drop in London, which has been so successful it now travels around Europe the festival circuit and clubs worldwide.

Following on from Deetron's brilliantly executed Balance 020 project, Balance Music presents Balance 021 mixed by Nic Fanciulli. The Saved Records boss delivers a stunningly intricate mix that Highlights his ethos as DJ and label owner.

CD1, entitled simply 'Balance' is a subtle and expertly crafted mix that balances a plethora of diverse tracks, often three at a time, to create an expansive but well focused journey. Infused with a true timeless quality, the mix was approached in a way that will enable it to sound as good in ten year time as it does today. Individual records were meticulously edited one by one to provide the album with a fluid and natural flow, displaying a more heightened sense of musicality than we are often used to in dance music. It's intelligent arrangement really paves the way for an overriding sense of permanence that is so often missing in many of today's compilations.

Not many record labels can lay claim to a 15 year stretch, but NRK Music has been a consistent and trusted source of the finest deep house and tech house music for the last decade and a half. Set up in 1996 in Bristol, UK, NRK Music quickly delivered a hefty slew of releases from the off from artists like Ian Pooley, François K, Dimitri From Paris and Nick Holder, and have never looked back since. Now with over 170 single releases and 45 albums, plus the mix compilation series Back In The Box, The Lab, nite:life and Deep Sensations, NRK prepare to celebrate 15 years in the business with "Forever Underground".

A 3CD package, "Forever Underground" collects some of the finest moments from the label's career to date, and showcases the variety of sounds and trends within the house music scene over the last 15 years. CD1 features such hi-lights as Quentin Harris' epic "Let's Be Young", the sensationally deep Charles Webster mix of Shara Nelson's "Go That Deep", Blackjoy's awesome disco jam "Moustache" and Foremost Poet's legendary call to the dancefloor "Moonraker", plus truly memorable deep house cuts from Nick Holder, Sirus and Twisted Pair.

CD3 is a bonus mix CD from NRK founder, DJ and producer, Nick Harris. "Wow, what can I say about this party in Cordoba earlier this year to do it justice? The crowds in Argentina never disappoint and are always up for a great night but this party took things to a whole new level for me. It was the first time the venue, TRES AGUAS had been used for an event like this which only seemed to create more anticipation and excitement for this party. We found out that people had travelled long distances to be there, coming from places like Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Rosario and beyond to check out the open air venue. The combination of this unique location and perfect weather meant that the vibe was already very special when I arrived at the gig.

I could see from the reaction to my very first record that this crowd was there to party and were totally united under the stars, creating one of the best party atmospheres I have experienced in a long while. I played for over 5 hours and really didn't want to stop, as I was having so much fun. Fortunately I recorded the set and I hope that this live cd helps to capture some of the energy from such an amazing party. Thanks to everyone who was there for creating such a memorable and special night."- John Digweed

the first 400 copies of the vinyl will include a special mystery jets comic. mystery jets release their fourth studio album 'radlands' on rough trade. the album was recorded in austin, texas and london and was co-produced by mystery jets and dan carey. ''we've always wanted to make a record in america and after touring 'serotonin' the time felt perfect to go and do it. our first three albums were entirely conceived and recorded in london so going out to austin felt like the furthest place from everything we knew.'' ''we arrived with a handful of songs, but one in particular felt like it captured the spirit of why we had come there. it was called 'radlands' (a fusion of the 1970s terrence malick film 'badlands' and redlands, keith richard's sussex estate), which is also what we named our studio; a big old wooden house on the banks of the colorado river.''
